Food Insecurity
Local and Regional

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines food insecurity as “a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active, healthy life.”  Approximately 150 families depend on the ELC Food Pantry on a consistent basis to help them put enough food on their tables.  Most of them pick up food once each week, meaning that we help between 400 and 600 people on a weekly basis "live an active, health life."  But that is just our narrow slice of Long Island.  According to our parent food bank, Long Island Cares, almost a quarter million people Island-wide face food-insecurity, a number that is due in part to the persistently high cost of living in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.  Pubic assistance alone cannot bridge the gap between chronic hunger and sufficient nutrition.  When you help us help our neighbors in need, you help ensure a productive and healthy society.  Please consider making a donation today.  THANK YOU!
